"Core Seminar ~ Foods, Agriculture, the Environment and Lives" is a one of the IUPE General Education Courses in Kyushu Univiversity

Taught Day: Autumn Semester in 2012 Tuesday, the 4th period (14.50-16.20)
Place: Ito campus Room1406
Instructor: Michikazu Hiramatsu（Assistant Professor, Dr. of Agriculture)

Students learn the close relationship between the diet, agricultural, environmental and medical issues through workshops in the classroom, short excursions and practieces outside the campus. This course is designed to teach students how to cosider and perform in daily life in relation to contemporary social issues such as increasing medical expenses, starvation, dicline of local agriculture, and decreasing biodiversity.

Tentative Weekly Schedule is as follows:

1. 10/09. Orientation & the work for Self-enlightment.
2. 10/16. What is biodiversity? ~ The well-balanced but fragile web.
3. 10/23. (Ex.) Let's see the nature conservation front! ~ Short excursion to the biodibersity conservation area in Ito campus (until 5p.m.).
4. 10/30. Who supports Japanese agriculture? ~ Self-sufficiency vs. Self-incuiry.
5. 11/06. (Ex.) Let's see the contacts between farmers and consumers! ~ Short excursion to local markets in the Itoshima area (until 5p.m.).
6. 11/13. No class (due to transfer to short excursions).
7. 11/20. What strange lives we eat! ~ Prisonors of suger and oil.
8. 11/27. Why do you eat? ~ Perspetive from the matter cycling.
9. 12/04. Biting makes you alive longer. ~ The gate of lives (from the Japanese popular commic "Hiyokko Ryouri-nin").
10. 12/11. Can you cook? 1 ~ Tasting "Dashi" (Japanese soup) stocks for checking your sense of taste.
11 .12/18. (Ex.) Can you cook? 2 ~ Cooking excercise by a food cordinator, Ms. Junko Ikuta at her kitchen studio (until 6p.m.).
12. 01/08. No class (due to transfer to 12/18 excercise）.
13. 01/22. "Itadakimasu", what a wonderful diet custom we have! ~ Its immeasurable potential to grow good mind.
14. 01/29. (Ex.) Final short exursion.
15. 02/05. So, what is your future mission? ~ Condition of happiness.
